What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a completely safe, comfortable and natural state and one your mind passes through several times during the day, although you may not be aware of this. It’s a state between waking and sleeping . . . called hypnagogic when you are going to sleep and hypnopompic when waking up.
Have you ever driven from one town to another and not been aware of going through various towns in-between? That was a state of mild hypnosis, called highway hypnosis. You were very safe because your subconscious mind took over for your “bored” conscious mind. You may have been thinking about your dinner plans, your errands for the day, or maybe what you were going to do on the weekend. In this state of heightened awareness, your senses were hyperacute and your reactions were faster. If you needed to swerve or apply the brakes you would do so. As a matter of fact, you are 200-300 times more alert in hypnosis. You may also be in a state of waking hypnosis when you are absorbed in a good book or movie, watching TV, or having a good daydream. At these times, your focus is so intense that you are oblivious to the activities and sounds around you.

Will I cluck like a chicken?
Many people associate hypnosis with stage hypnosis. The perception is that the hypnotist has total control and can make people cluck like a chicken and bark like a dog. This can’t be farther from the truth! Stage hypnosis is pure entertainment. . . volunteers are selected who like attention, are extroverts, and are comfortable with suggestions to entertain. They will receive a suggestion not to initially remember what happened during hypnosis but will remember later. It’s all about having fun!

Will I lose control?
Hypnosis requires 100% consent. You are an active participant and will hear everything said during hypnosis. The hypnotist is merely a guide. You are always in control and have a choice to accept or reject a suggestion. You would not accept a suggestion that goes against your ethical or moral principles. And you will never get stuck in hypnosis!

Now, let’s see how hypnosis works . . .
Hypnosis works by learning the rhythms and patterns between your conscious, subconscious and unconscious mind. The application of hypnotism is based solely on the relationship between the conscious and subconscious mind. Therefore, it's important to understand the function of each so you can understand how hypnosis works.
Conscious Mind
Your conscious mind is your present awareness. For instance, in reading this, you are aware of the words on the page. What you may not be aware of is the sound of traffic outside, the birds chirping in the trees, or even the hum of your computer. The conscious mind can only hold the information you are currently focusing on and it is only able to retain 7 pieces of information at a time. It is the part of your mind that analyzes and solves problems, makes decisions, and exercises willpower. At any given moment, the conscious mind is evaluating situations, concerns, or issues. The conscious mind is the place of temporary memory, the memory we use everyday to function.
Subconscious Mind
Your subconscious mind is the “brains behind the operation.” The subconscious mind is extremely powerful and much like an organic computer with a huge memory bank. We program our organic computer every day, since birth, with everything we hear, see, feel, and experience, also including our self-talk. Every day we add more programming. It has been estimated that the subconscious mind receives two billion pieces of information per second. The subconscious mind is the seat of our emotions, habits, core beliefs, and our permanent memory. Your subconscious mind operates according to what is programmed and must decide what kind of person you are based on this current information. And . . . also like a computer you can change the operation with new software or new programming and bring about the positive changes you desire.
Critical Factor
The critical factor works as a sort of guard in your conscious mind. It is the gatekeeper between the conscious and subconscious mind. It has the power to accept or reject new programming. Its job is to protect you. It decides if changes, even positive, are accepted or rejected because they are not consistent with current programming. Therefore, you must change your programming from the inside out. Hypnosis allows you to bypass the critical factor and reach the subconscious mind in order to change your programming with positive suggestions.
Change Your Mind and Change Your Life
Hypnosis is a powerful catalyst for creating rapid behavior change, especially with personalized Life Design Hypnosis techniques. When using the very same principles behind our natural behavior creation, we can easily quit old habits as well as create new ones. One very important point to remember is that for positive suggestions to be accepted and get past the conscious mind it is crucial to have an open mind and positive attitude. Negative self-talk and failure words, such as hope and try, should be replaced with “I will” and “I can,” and changes will begin to happen immediately. And, when you change your mind or programming, you can change your entire life!
